What to Eat at BBQs

If you’re going to a summer BBQ, but don’t want to fall off the diet wagon, you’ve got two options:

  1. Make the best choices with what you’re given

  2. BYO

Option two is my favorite because 1) I’m a control freak and 2) I know my body so well, I know exactly what foods/brands/portions work best for me. If you feel funny bringing / eating your own, just remember… no one actually cares what you’re putting in your mouth. Eat what’s going to make YOU feel good tomorrow and forget about any opinions.

Here’s how I typically navigate food at summer gatherings…

  1. Go bunless for burgers and dogs

  2. Double up on those burgers and dogs (the protein will keep you from bingeing on carbs)

  3. Sip seltzer, unsweetened iced tea or water

  4. Avoid anything with macaroni in it

  5. Load up your plate with veggies, cheese and fruit

  6. If you’re going to splurge on something, start with cheese

  7. Avoid anything with breading on it

  8. Potato salad actually isn’t so bad… you’re welcome

  9. Put some butter on your corn to balance out the carbs

  10. Deviled eggs!!!!!

Tip: If you end up going overboard despite your best effort (it happens to the best of us, don’t feel bad), just get back on track tomorrow with a quick Cleanse reset.

If you’re going the BYO route, here are a few crowd faves:

  1. Siete tortilla chips

  2. Whole Foods guac (seriously it’s the best)

  3. Simple Mills pita chips and hummus

  4. Simple Mills crackers and cheese

  5. Brownies

As for drinks, here are 20 clean cocktail recipes for summer. Cheers!
